5 Ways to Keep Your Employees Happy

Fact: Nobody likes waking up early in the morning to a 9-5 job that’s depressing. Work is tough enough already and the way you treat your employees will play a substantial role in productivity. Below are just a few ways to bring smiles to your employees and boost overall company morale:

1. Don’t be a &#@^$. I’m sure I won’t have to explain exactly what those symbols represent, but basically, don’t be that. As a boss or a manager, it’s normal to have the natural intimidating aspect or an aura of authority, but don’t push the line of bullying. Employees want respect and be inspired by their leaders, not frightened by them. Stay humble, but set boundaries when necessary.

2. Keep it fun and light. I’d be surprised to hear anyone saying, “I want to work in an environment where I’m locked down and have to maintain my professional and corporate pose at all times.” Maybe if you’re a robot. Of course, I’m not suggesting that you operate a circus during business hours (unless you really do), but promoting a fun and light environment in the workplace will help boost creativity, morale, and productivity overall. Games and happy hours once a week are great suggestions to start with.

3. Be personable. These days in most companies, especially big corporations, the guy at the bottom of the job chain hardly ever gets to see the top of the pyramid or even a few notches above their rank. For most employees, seeing the human side of their boss or manager is refreshing. Take breaks and go to happy hours with your employees, but you don’t have to get to the point where you’re spewing all your life and pity stories.

4. Free stuff. It’s a nice gesture to buy lunch or a 12-pack of beer on a Friday afternoon once in a while to show that you appreciate your employees. It’s these simple, little perks that add up to lasting morale and increase loyalty.

5. Acknowledge great work. “Thank you” is a simple phrase that just doesn’t get used enough. Whether it’s a small task or a large project, showing gratitude to your employees when they deserve it shows you care and paying attention. Everyone wants to feel appreciated for the hard work they’re putting in!
