Biggest SEO Pet Peeves

When I started learning and providing search engine optimization (SEO) services in 2005, there weren’t many companies offering any kind of internet marketing service. SEO just started to get the attention of marketing companies and now in the present day, everyone’s offering it, from webmasters to designers to stay-at-home moms. The problem is, with so many options out there, it’s hard to determine who’s qualified to offer their services. With any industry, there is usually a small percentage of excellent service providers and products, with the rest mediocre to terrible.

I’ve created a list of my biggest SEO pet peeves that you may have unfortunately encountered yourself. Hopefully, you’ll be able to avoid these future pitfalls:

Biggest SEO Pet Peeve #1: “I offer web development/design services…and SEO too!”

One of the most frustrating things to hear from new clients is that they were burned by their former SEO guy who built them a great website, but couldn’t get them anywhere in the search engines. For some reason, most people think there is some direct correlation between building a website and optimizing your site because you’re in control of the code modifications, but that’s like saying your favorite Mexican restaurant also makes great Vietnamese food…after all, they have similar ingredients like lettuce and rice, right?

SEO is a completely different field than web development and web design, requiring years of research and practice. While Motoza offers good-looking basic web design packages to start out with, we would never claim to be a web development company and would even recommend finding a more suitable developer for more complex tasks.

Biggest SEO Pet Peeve #2: “With more traffic and higher rankings, you’re going to make more money online!”

Everywhere I go, it seems like the main marketing message from SEO companies is that they’ll link build the hell out of your site until you achieve your goal in traffic, which would therefore mean success. What you usually don’t see are those same SEO consultants crossing their fingers and praying that the targeted traffic they helped generated will hopefully buy more.

The reality is, you can have thousands of extra visitors coming to your website, but if no one likes what they see or the site is too difficult to use, they will leave and you won’t get any sales. There needs to be a greater emphasis on making visitors feel comfortable and need your products and services. I’m sure everyone has seen restaurants and stores on high traffic roads that go out of business in a couple of years because people eventually find a similar store that is better for their needs – that same concept applies to online businesses as well.

Biggest SEO Pet Peeve #3: “Our processes help our SEO consultants easily manage 20-30+ clients at a time.”

There is nothing wrong with having a set of processes that help you to work more efficiently and allow you to increase your creativity. However, I think many SEO companies take it too far and turn their processes into a fast food assembly line, taking the personal touches and custom modifications away. I hear a lot of complaints from new clients who have used other SEO companies in the past and they were frustrated how they were treated more as a number instead of a customer. If they wanted to talk to someone that was managing their product, they would have to speak to someone halfway across the world or wait forever to get a response from their consultant or someone who knows what they were talking about.

Motoza is different. We’ve eliminated or improved the things that weren’t working in many internet marketing and SEO companies, and took the best parts of internet marketing and refined it. We’re absolutely committed to your success and we want to be proud of our work!
