Small Business Round-up – Week of August 19th

This week’s small business news review found ways for small service providers to get paid promptly, another reason to hate (okay, fear) the IRS, five helpful small business apps, how features of a logo express your company, and a neat way to have a baby.

• IOUs Don’t Work in Small Biz       Certain small businesses rely on prompt payments to survive. Service providers that perform on-going services are especially vulnerable if payments are not received on time. There are a few steps small biz owners should take to secure payment and stay afloat.              
• Fear the Taxman     Small Biz owners are often targeted by the IRS for audits. Agents are looking for underreported income and misclassification of workers. IRS head Daniel Werfel has indicated small businesses may face increased scrutiny.

• Honey, I’m Pregnant!     Max Levchin knows how to fill a need. After all, he co-founded Paypal and is chairman of Yelp. He’s developed a new app (free!) targeting couples and single women. The application, called Glow, helps users trying to get pregnant by establishing a schedule and providing daily fertility recommendations. And it’s just part of a larger trend in personal wellness.
